Fructose Malabsorption
Fructose malabsorption
is a condition in which the fructose carrier in
enterocytes
is deficient. Symptoms and medical tests are similar as in
lactose intolerance
. This condition is common in patients with symptoms of
irritable bowel syndrome
. An appropriate diet can help. A small proportion of patients with both fructose malabsorption and
lactose intolerance
suffers from
coeliac disease
. This is not to be confused with
fructose intolerance
, an inherited condition in which the liver enzymes that break fructose up are deficient. See also:
