Frei is a municipality in the county of Mre og Romsdal, Norway. Frei is located on the main island of the same name and the small surrounding islands, south of the town Kristiansund* (where many people of Frei make their living). The Viking-era Battle of Rastarkalv, between Haakon I of Norway and the sons of Eric I of Norway, took place here in 955 AD. * Frei will merge with Kristiansund on January 1, 2008. The new municipality's name, as well as its administrative center, will be Kristiansund.
