Free Runtimes

Free Runtimes is what Free/Open Source Java Advocates call virtual machines. This is to contrast it with the proprietary nature of Sun's JVM. Examples of Free Runtimes include Kaffe, SableVM, gcj, and many others. Many Free Runtimes use GNU Classpath as their class library.
