Fred Upton

Frederick Stephen Upton (born April 23, 1953), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987. Born in St. Joseph, Michigan, Fred Upton earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1975. He served in the Office of Management and Budget under President Reagan from 1981-85. He represented Michigan from the 4th District from 1987-93 and since 1993, has represented Michigan from the 6th District (map). Often described as the Ironman of the House, Upton established a multi-year run of 100% voting attendance in the House. He has earned a reputation as a leader and a dealmaker, helping to guide a powerful bloc of moderate House Members in unison, playing influential roles in a number of tax relief and budget matters. Despite his willingness to buck the right leaning House leadership, his down to earth demeanor and frequent greeting of "call me Fred" when referred to as "Congressman" has earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow Representatives, staff, and members of the public affairs community. Upton has a solid reputation of putting his district first, playing a critical role in the economic revitalization of Kalamazoo, despite a number of pharmaceutical companies reducing their presence, and in mediating short and long term solutions to racial tension in Benton Harbor, which spilled over in to several nights of riots in 2003. In the 108th Congress, Upton serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Education and the Workforce Committee.
