Franklin Township, Gloucester County, New JerseyFranklin Township is a township located in Gloucester County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 15,466. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 146.2 km² (56.4 mi²). 145.1 km² (56.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.74% water. Franklin Township borders Elk Township, Clayton, Monroe Township, and Newfield. Franklin Township also borders Salem County, Cumberland County, and Atlantic County. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,466 people, 5,225 households, and 4,190 families residing in the township. The population density is 106.6/km² (276.1/mi²). There are 5,461 housing units at an average density of 37.6/km² (97.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 90.22% White, 6.66% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 3.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,225 households out of which 40.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.9% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.8% are non-families. 15.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.94 and the average family size is 3.29. In the township the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males. The median income for a household in the township is $55,169, and the median income for a family is $60,518. Males have a median income of $41,159 versus $27,538 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,277. 5.1% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
