Franklin County, Texas

Franklin County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 9,458. Its county seat is Mount Vernon6. Although the origin of the county's name is not recorded, it is generally believed to have been named after Judge Benjamin C. Franklin.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 763 km² (295 mi²). 740 km² (286 mi²) of it is land and 24 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.09% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,458 people, 3,754 households, and 2,732 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (33/mi²). There are 5,132 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.19% White, 3.94% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 5.14% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 8.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,754 households out of which 30.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.95. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 18.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,955, and the median income for a family is $37,064. Males have a median income of $28,806 versus $19,361 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,563. 15.60% of the population and 12.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.20% of those under the age of 18 and 12.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
