Whilst causing havoc in the lives of all around him, it becomes apparent that he is searching for the man who sent proof of his treason to the Scots. He is aided and abetted in his search by a variety of people, including Sybilla, the Dowager Lady Culter (his mother), Will Scott (a Scottish nobleman), Lady Christian Stewart (a blind Scottish girl), and Gideon Somerville (one of the men Lymond suspects may have betrayed him). Further complications arise from the fact that Lymond's brother Richard is trying to kill him, initially to avenge the family honour, and then because he believes that Lymond cuckolded him. A number of real historical characters appear in the novel, including Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus, Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox and Mary of Guise.
