Forts

Forts is the name of a dpartement of the First French Empire in present Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Its name (literally: woods) comes from the Ardennes forests. It was formed in 1795, when the former duchies of Luxembourg and Bouillon were occupied by the French. Its capital was Luxembourg. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1814 most of the dpartement became part of the Netherlands. Its territory is presently divided over the Grand-duchy of Luxembourg, the Belgian province Luxembourg and the German land Rhineland-Palatinate. The Forts dpartement was divided into the following arrondissements and cantons:
