Fort Wainwright

Fort Wainwright is the United States Army base command to the 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment that was established in 1917 near Fairbanks, Alaska. The stated general operational mission of the base is to "develop and maintain the ability to provide artillery support in an arctic environment," often in temperatures up to a non-windchill-factor of 40-degrees below zero. In 1965 a fire broke out close to Fairbanks that extended into 1966 before it was extinguished. The bases 2nd battalion was called in to help fight the fires. The base's mission to help fight the fires started as a seemingly minor mission, but turned out to be months of fire fighting with the city of Fairbanks in imminent danger. Additional support units from the United States Army, Air Force, and Bureau of Land Management were also brought into the base command to help fight the fires and save Fairbanks.
