Forkland is a town located in Greene County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 629.

Geography

Forkland is located at 32°38'52" North, 87°52'2" West (32.647702, -87.867236). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²). 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.29% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 629 people, 245 households, and 161 families residing in the town. The population density is 69.6/km² (180.2/mi²). There are 309 housing units at an average density of 34.2/km² (88.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 10.65% White, 89.19% Black or African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.16% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 245 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.5% are married couples living together, 27.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.32. In the town the population is spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $18,698, and the median income for a family is $22,115. Males have a median income of $24,375 versus $16,544 for females. The per capita income for the town is $9,314. 31.5% of the population and 29.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.2% of those under the age of 18 and 31.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
