Ford Power Stroke EngineThe Power Stroke is a family of diesel truck engines sold by Ford Motor Company. There are two entirely different engines offered under the Power Stroke name. 2.8 The 2.8 L straight-4 Power Stroke 2.8 is manufactured in Brazil for use outsude North America. 6.0 The 6.0 L (363 in³) Power Stroke is manufactured by Navistar International Corporation. More technical information is available on the Navistar VT engine page. It is a 32-valve pushrod V8. Bore is 3.74 in (95 mm) and stroke is 4.13 in (105 mm). Output is 325 hp (242 kW) at 3300 rpm and 560 ft.lbf (759 Nm) at 2000 rpm. The 6.0 L engine replaced the 7.3, also built by Navistar in Indianapolis, but has not been as successful. A high number of warranty claims (US$50,000,000 in two years) caused Ford to discontinue their contract with Navistar to build a Diesel V6 and paying US$70,000,000 to Navistar as compensation for ending the contract. Ford considered Navistar rival, Cummins, before deciding to design a new Diesel V6, now known as the DT17, in-house. The 6.0 L Power Stroke turbodiesel was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2003. Applications: 7.3 The 7.3 L Power Stroke was an earlier Navistar design. Also a V8, it used a 104.3 mm bore and 106.1 mm stroke. Power output was 275 hp (205 kW) at 2800 rpm and 520 ft.lbf (705 Nm) at 1600 rpm. Navistar built nearly 2 million 7.3 L Power Stroke V8s for Ford at their Indianapolis, Indiana plant before switching to the 6.0. Applications: See also Power Stroke
