Fodor's Travel Guides

Fodor's Travel Guides (Fodor rhymes with "motor") are a series of travel guides, the largest English language travel information provider in the world, founded by Eugene Fodor in 1936.

The First Fodor's Travel Guide

Fodor was a keen traveller, but felt that the guidebooks of his time were boring and uninspired collections of facts and figures. In an attempt to remedy this problem, he wrote a guide to Europe, 1936...On the Continent - The Entertaining Travel Annual. Instead of just giving information on what to see, 1936...On the Continent - The Entertaining Travel Annual also provided information on the people and cultures of Europe. For example, in the introduction, Fodor wrote "Rome contains not only magnificent monuments, but also Italians." Another important advance that 1936...On the Continent - The Entertaining Travel Annual pioneered was annual updates. As the book was updated yearly, travellers would not arrive somewhere only to find their hotel of choice had been closed for five years, something which had happened to Fodor before.

Fodor's Today

Today Fodor's Travel Guides publish over 440 guide books and more than 14 different series. Fodor's has more than 700 permanently placed researches all over the world, who send in information each year to be written into the latest guide book for their respective locations. In 1996, Fodor's launched a website, which has been nominated for several Webby Awards.
