Flying Nun Records
is probably the most influential
independent record label
in
New Zealand
. Many of the most prominent
kiwi rock
bands come from Flying Nun, including
The Clean
and
The Chills
. The label was formed in
Christchurch
in
1981
by
Roger Shepherd
after a flurry of other
punk rock
-inspired labels were formed in
Auckland
.
The Pin Groups
' "Ambivalence" was the first recording released by Flying Nun. Subsequent releases included The Clean's
Boodle Boodle Boodle
and
Great Sounds Great
, as well as a compilation called
Dunedin Double
. These recordings gave rise to the
Dunedin Sound
.
