Floyd, Virginia

Floyd is a town located in Floyd County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 432. It is the county seat of Floyd County.

Geography

Floyd is located at 36°54'44" North, 80°19'6" West (36.912150, -80.318408). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 432 people, 238 households, and 117 families residing in the town. The population density is 362.6/km² (942.3/mi²). There are 264 housing units at an average density of 221.6/km² (575.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.29% White, 4.63% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.23% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 238 households out of which 18.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.0% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.8% are non-families. 49.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 31.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.82 and the average family size is 2.57. In the town the population is spread out with 18.5% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 30.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 70.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 66.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $25,781, and the median income for a family is $40,938. Males have a median income of $27,232 versus $19,464 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,557. 13.2% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
