Florida Comprehensive Assessment TestThe Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or the FCAT, is the means of standardized testing in the primary and secondary public schools of Florida. First administered in 1998, it replaced the CTBS, Terra Nova, and HSCT exams. The FCAT Reading and FCAT Math exams are administered annually to all students in grades three through ten. FCAT Science is administered annually to students in the fifth, eighth, and eleventh grades. across the state of Florida to gauge success in mastering reading and mathematics. In the fourth, eighth, and tenth grade, an FCAT Writing exam is given to gauge proficiency in writing. These tests have been under fire from education groups, accusing Governor Jeb Bush of teaching students how to pass a test, giving this priority over teaching students material in the core subjects of English, mathematics, social studies, and science. The test is designed to teach students what to look for in the questions to get the right answer, rather than teaching students the material so that when the question comes up they know the answer and won't have to search for it. Student results from this test rank each school with a "grade" system under Jeb Bush's A+ Plan. Under this plan, schools receive a grade from A to F, depending on student performance. The higher a school scores the more funding it receives. This controversial method has been greatly disputed by educators and community members who accuse Governor Jeb Bush of taking funding from schools who need it most, and giving it to those who don't. This system is put to reward the achieving schools with extra funding, but gives no funding or support to lower ranking schools. External link
