Five Towns

The Five Towns is a group of villages (not towns) in Nassau County, New York on the south shore of eastern Long Island. The five villages are Lawrence, Hewlett, Cedarhurst, Woodmere, and Inwood. Coincidentally, each of these villages has a consecutive stop on the Far Rockaway line of the Long Island Rail Road and each village is incorporated under the Town of Hempstead. There are several more villages that are sometimes considered to be part of the five towns, including Atlantic Beach, Woodsburgh, Hewlett Harbor and North Woodmere. Woodmere is the largest and most populous community in the Five Towns, while the commercial and cultural hub is usually considered to be Cedarhurst, with its fine shopping area and nearby park. There are two school districts in the Five Towns, the Lawrence School district (district 15) and the Hewlett-Woodmere School district (district 14). Roughly speaking, the Lawrence school district contains all of Lawrence, Cedarhurst and Inwood, and part of Woodmere while the Hewlett-Woodmere district contains all of Hewlett and part of Woodmere. The five towns area is usually characterized by a largely upper middle class jewish population, although this may not be entirely true.
