fipple (dict)

Fipple

A fipple is a mouthpiece that uses a narrow windway and a blade-like edge to channel and vibrate air blown into it. It is commonly found on end-blown woodwind instruments such as the tin whistle and the recorder. The bore of the mouthpiece is usually around 1/32 the bore of the sounding tube, and is often of a rectangular or flat lozenge cross-section. This narrow channel opens to full bore at the start of a cut-away in the wall of the instrument. The other end of this cut-away has a bladed edge which sets up a resonance in the instrument.
