Ffion Hague
Ffion Hague
(ne Jenkins)
is the wife of
William Hague
, the former leader of the
UK Conservative Party
(
1997
-
2001
). Mr Hague met her when he became
Secretary of State for Wales
in
1995
under the
John Major's
government. Determined not to repeat the faux pas of his predecessor,
John Redwood
, who was famously seen miming the words to the Welsh national anthem, Hague recruited a Ffion Jenkins, a
civil servant
, to help him learn the words. They married in December
1997
, shortly after he had been elected leader of the
UK Conservative Party
and
Leader of the Opposition
. Upon marriage, Ffion Hague resigned from the
Civil Service
.
