Felicia

Felicia is the pseudonym of an individual who anonymously emerged as an internal informant in Marvel Comics in 2002. Though mainly known for her first prediction in which comic publisher Marvel Entertainment fired a leading industry creator Mark Waid, before disappearing Felicia left behind a slew of other rumors which were later considered to be predictions on a series of internet forums throughout the comic book internet community. Felicia became more publicly known as she leaked information through Rich Johnston and his controversial column "Lying In The Gutters", a popular cyber rumor mill for comic book fan community. Due to the nature of her rumors, Felicia was suspected to be many of the company's own public figures, ranging from employed creators to editors. Of these, a predominate theory was that Felicia was Marvel's then President, Bill Jemas, in yet another publicity stunt and attempt to bring more attention to the company; similar to other publicity stunts he had conducted in the past. However, this theory is believed to be unlikely, as Jemas seemed to be the main target for most of Felicia's critisicm regarding the company's management, strategy and public relations. Additionally, her presence and actions were later seen as a factor in the decisions that lead to his removal as President, an event that occurred shortly after her appearance. After Felicia had vanished, a second theory emerged. It was believed that Felicia had been in fact Nancy Dakesian, the wife of Marvel's current editor-in-chief, Joe Quesada, and that she had leaked information that placed Quesada in a favorable light amid an ongoing internal power struggle. Dakesian departed from the company sometime afterward as her contract was not renewed. Many other rumors regarding who Felicia was have emerged, including that Felicia had been Rich Johnston all along, but Rich Johnston denies all these. Indeed, since Felicia's allegations appeared on extrernal message boards, if Rich were Felicia, he'd have done himself out of scoops for his column. Felicia's true identity remains a mystery to date - though not to Rich Johnston.

Claims and predictions

It is noted that within the predictions that made her popular, Felicia had stated some accuracies. Of these, the boldest claims were in decisions the comic book company was about to make. For instance, one claim was that Marvel would rewrite American pop icon and hero, Spider-Man, fictionally altering the character to become the biological child of Aunt May, instead of a nephew as it was long portrayed by Marvel. That Mark Waid would be fired from the Fantastic Four by Bill Jemas. Another was that "Epic", a new 2002 Marvel subsidiary desiring to attract and introduce new industry talent would fail due to an alleged hidden agenda. Also, that the income Marvel generated from its publishing division comprised only 5% of its total income in 2002. It was this financial fact that lent credence to one of her last predictions which stated that Marvel was at the brink of an exodus, in which many employed by the company would leave and that this would be a sign of Marvel preparing to shut down its publishing branch in a corporate shift that didn't favor the loyal fans of the comicbooks. Though many employees did in fact leave after her announcement, the publishing branch never did shut down and is still functioning properly as a seemingly crucial part of the company. It is also recognized that Felicia shared much of her knowledge on the basis that Marvel's internal affairs and business decisions could be affected or altered by fans if they became collectively aware of their own influence.
