Fayette, Alabama

Fayette is a city located in Fayette County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 4,922. The city is the county seat of Fayette County.

Geography

Fayette is located at 33°41'31" North, 87°49'56" West (33.692068, -87.832358). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.4 km² (8.6 mi²). 22.2 km² (8.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,922 people, 2,092 households, and 1,303 families residing in the city. The population density is 222.0/km² (575.1/mi²). There are 2,336 housing units at an average density of 105.4/km² (273.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.34% White, 23.38% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,092 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 35.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.85. In the city the population is spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 81.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $25,714, and the median income for a family is $36,589. Males have a median income of $29,857 versus $21,899 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,553. 18.0% of the population and 12.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.2% of those under the age of 18 and 22.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
