Farragut SquareFarragut Square is a square located in Washington, DC's Ward 2. It is bordered by K Street on the North, Connecticut Avenue on the East, I Street on the South, and 17th Street on the West. In the center of the square is a statue of David G. Farragut, a Northern admiral in the Civil War famous for rallying his fleet with the cry, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" The statue's only inscription is "Farragut"http://sandstead.com/images/washington/various/REAM_Vinnie_Admiral_Farragut_ded_1881_bronze_Farragut_Square_LS_d100_07.jpg. The statue was sculpted by Vinnie Ream Hoxie. Farragut Square functions as a hub of downtown DC. It is serviced by two stops on the Washington Metro, Farragut North on the Red Line and Farragut West on the Blue and Orange lines. Farragut Square is in the center of a commercial and business district, and workers from nearby businesses frequently stop to have lunch in or around the square. Sometimes events are scheduled with this in mind, such as the free "Farragut Sounds in the Square" jazz concert series, held every Thursday from noon to 2 PM from July 3 to August 19. Other attractions in and around Farragut Square include the Bravo Bravo nightclub, a wireless hotspot at a local Starbucks, and many street vendors. Due to its proximity to both the John Kerry for President Campaign's national headquarters and the White House, Farragut North is frequently a site of political activity such as canvassing and demonstrations.
