farciennes

Farciennes is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Hainaut. On January 1st, 2004 Farciennes had a total population of 11,229 (5,340 males and 5,889 females). The total area is 10.39 km² which gives a population density of 1,081.23 inhabitants per km². It is located on the entre-Sambre-et-Meuse in the periphery of Charleroi. Farciennes is industrialized an in the past city. It knew its decline with the closing of the last Walloon coal minin, namely the Sainte-Catherine well of the company of Roton, and the fall of iron and steel industries, formerly large pourvoyeuses of employment between Liege and Charleroi. Today, the site of Roton whose only the tower and the cloakroom remain, was arranged to accommodate the establishment of small and medium-sized undertakings. Since the merger of the communes of 1979, Farciennes integrated in its centre the small commune of Pironchamps. As for Wainage and Wairchat (not Werchat), they are offset districts which belonged already to the territory of Farciennes, just like Tergne, for example.
