Ex Astris Scientia

Ex Astris, Scientia is the motto of Starfleet Academy from the Star Trek television series. It is Latin for "from the stars, comes knowledge". The motto was first seen on an Academy emblem in the background of The Next Generation episode The First Duty, although at that time, it read as the less grammatically correct "Ex Astra, Scientia". (In Latin, the preposition ex is ablative, and therefore requires astr- in its ablative form). The motto was likely to have been based on either the motto of the Apollo 13 mission, "Ex luna scientia" (from the moon, comes knowledge), or on the motto of the U.S. Navy, "Ex tridens scientia" (from the sea, comes knowledge). Ex Astris Scientia has been adopted by Bernd Schneider for his website dedicated to information on the Star Trek fictional universe; the site is considered by most Star Trek fans to be among if not the very best of sites on the subject due to its great size and scope, the high reliability of its facts, and its intelligent, well thought out opinions. Features of the site include galleries, specifications, and in-depth examinations of varieties of starships; examinations of various technologies; episode guides on all of the Star Trek movies and series, including ; a timeline and character biographies; works of fan fiction; a database of non-canon ship designs; book and model kit reviews; and a list of hyperlinks.
