Euskadiko Ezkerra

Euskadiko Ezkerra (Basque Country Left, in Basque) or EE was a Spanish Basque socialist political organisation. It was founded as a coalition of Euskal Iraultzarako Alderdia (EIA, Basque Party for Revolution or Party for Basque Revolution) and other Basque marxist forces in 1977 to present lists for the Spanish general elections in the constituencies of Biscay, Guipzcoa and lava, while Unai, an allied coalition, was to present a list in the constituency of Navarre. EE's list in Guipzcoa won one seat in the Spanish Congress for Francisco Letamenda, one in the Senate for Juan Mara Bandrs, a lawyer for ETA members, and none in the other constituencies. Many militants of EE (including candidates from these lists, as Pedro Solabarra, Jon Idgoras, Santiago Brouard, Flix Egua "Argala", and Ignacio Esnaola) eventually separated from the coalition and formed Herri Batasuna. EE called for in the Referendum for Spanish Constitution in 1978. Several of the militants of ETA (pm) joined peaceful political action in EE after they abandoned violence and negotiated pardons with the Spanish government. In 1982 it joined with some sectors of PCE-EPK (Communist Party of the Basque Country, the Basque branch of PCE) and became a party under the name EE-IPS, Euskadiko Ezkerra-Izquierda para el Socialismo ("Left for the Socialism"), while often using the simpler name Euskadiko Ezkerra. Its general secretary in this period was Mario Onaindia, a former ETA member during the Franco era, later substituted by Kepa Aulestia. EE called for No to permanence of Spain in the NATO in the referendum held in 1986. The Yes won the vote in Spain, but the No was the first choice for citizens the Basque Auntonomous Community. After the split of the PNV (Basque Nationalist Party) and the creation of (Eusko Alkartasuna) in 1987, EE stablished several coalitions with EA. In 1991 EE entered in the government of the Basque Autonomous Community in coalition with both PNV and EA. Later in 1991 a majority of party affiliates aproved a fussion with PSE (Socialist Party of Euskadi), the branch of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) for the Basque Autonomous Community. However a section of the party (including deputy Xabier Albistur) disagreed with the absortion, and created a new party, Euskal Ezkerra (EuE, Basque Left). Their logo had half an ikurrina (Basque flag) in the left side, and a white and black capital E in the right side.
