European Centre For Medium-range Weather Forecasts

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international intergovernmental organization based at Reading, England that was founded in 1975.

Objectives

The objectives of the ECMWF are:
  • Development of numerical methods for medium-range weather forecasting
  • Preparation of medium-range weather forecasts for distribution to the member states
  • Scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts
  • Collection and storage of appropriate meteorological data.

Work and Projects

The ECMWF has been producing operational medium-range weather forecasts since 1979-08-01. The ERA-15 project generated reanalyses from December 1978 to February 1994. The ERA-40 project generated reanalyses from 1957.

Members

The ECMWF members are of 18 European states: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom The ECMWF has co-operation agreements with 7 other states: Croatia, Czech Republic, Iceland, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro,
