Eureka Tower is an apartment building currently being built in the Southbank precinct of Melbourne, Australia. Construction began in 2001 and is expected to be completed in 2005. On completion, Eureka Tower will have become the tallest skyscraper in the Southern Hemisphere, superseding the current tallest Rialto Towers (also in Melbourne); and the tallest residential building in the world (both titles are when the building's height is measured to its roof; the Q1 apartment tower concurrently being built on the Gold Coast, Queensland will be taller in both categories when measured to the top of its spire, but shorter to its roof). The 'Big E' as it is known amongst skyscraper enthusiasts, will rise 297.2m above ground (exactly 300m above sea level), and comprise 91 stories. Eureka Tower was designed by local architectural firm Fender Katsalidis Australia and is being built by Grocon (Grollo Australia). Eureka Tower's lift core superseded the height of Rialto Towers on November 9 2004. See also Tall buildings in Melbourne for a list of other skyscrapers in Melbourne.
