Ethna Carbery

Ethna Carbery was the pseudonym of Anna MacManus, nee Johnston, (1866 1902), an Irish writer and poet. She is known for some songs, Roddy McCorley (also though the title of a traditional ballad), and Song of Ciabhan, set to music by Ivor Gurney. She was born in Ballymena, County Antrim. She married in 1901 the ex-teacher, poet and folklorist Samus MacManus (1869-1960). She founded with Alice Milligan two nationalist publications The Northern Patriot, and then The Shan Van Vocht in 1896, which appeared monthly until 1899.
