Erwin, North CarolinaErwin is a town located in Harnett County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,537. Geography Erwin is located at 35°19'22" North, 78°40'19" West (35.322840, -78.672005). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.5 km² (4.1 mi²). 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.99% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,537 people, 1,896 households, and 1,287 families residing in the town. The population density is 435.8/km² (1,128.8/mi²). There are 2,032 housing units at an average density of 195.2/km² (505.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 80.63% White, 15.96% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.79% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 4.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,896 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.90. In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $29,521, and the median income for a family is $41,270. Males have a median income of $29,610 versus $22,650 for females.
