Ernesto Geisel

Ernesto Geisel (3 August, 1907 - 12 September, 1996) was a Brazilian military general. Elected President of Brazil by the Congress, he took the oath of office on March 15, 1974 and served until March 15, 1979. During his term, Geisel began a slow process of democratization (Distenso) and eased the censure. In the end of his tenure he banned the AI-5 (Institutional Act 5), the main tool of the dictatorship. Geisel was replaced by general Joo Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo.
