Enumclaw, Washington

Enumclaw is a city located in Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,116. Its name derives from a local Native American word meaning "strong wind" or "thundering noise." It was homesteaded in 1879 by Frank and Mary Stevenson. The first plats were filed six years later, and the city was incorporated on January 27, 1913. It is home to the Enumclaw Courier-Herald newspaper and Mutual of Enumclaw, an insurer doing business in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,116 people, 4,317 households, and 2,840 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,097.7/km² (2,842.8/mi²). There are 4,456 housing units at an average density of 440.0/km² (1,139.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.25% White, 0.30% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 2.62% from two or more races. 3.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,317 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.13. In the city the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $43,820, and the median income for a family is $56,270. Males have a median income of $46,060 versus $30,926 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,596. 8.2% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
