Enterprise Messaging System

An Enterprise Messaging System (EMS) is a system that allows companies to send semantically precise messages between computer systems. EMS systems promote Loosely Coupled Architectures that allow changes in the formats of messages to have minimum impact on message subscribers. EMS systems are facilitated by the use of XML messaging, SOAP and Web Services. EMS systems should be designed with two considerations: 1) How will messages be routed from the sender to the reciever? 2) How will the body of the document contain information that can be unambigiously interpreterted? The first question is related to message header protocol design. The second relates to message semantics. Message Semantics can be aided by the use of a precise data dictionary that documents Metadata (computing).
