Emyn ArnenIn the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, Emyn Arnen is a series of hills in Ithilien, Gondor. Emyn Arnen (Sindarin "High Hills") was home to a family of Nmenrean nobles, and from them came a Hrin of Emyn Arnen, who became steward to King Minardil of Gondor and later founded the line of the House of Hrin. The hills remained in the keep of the Stewards, and during the later Third Age after Ithilien had been evacuated they kept a hidden outpost here. During the War of the Ring, Faramir son of Steward Denethor II had his base of operations here, and here Frodo Baggins and his servant Samwise Gamgee were taken. The dwelling of Faramir was called Henneth Annn (Window of the Sunset), and it overlooked a waterfall and a pool. After the events of the War of the Ring Faramir became Prince of Ithilien, and made Emyn Arnen his home. He and his descendants therefore also became known as Lords of Emyn Arnen.
In Peter Jackson's movie trilogy, Emyn Arnen is represented as a large cave with some supplies. This is inconsistent with the history of the place given above and must be due to the compression of history in the movies.
