Elly Plooij-van GorselElly Plooij- van Gorsel was born on 20 March 1947, in Tholen, Netherlands. She was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in the delegation of the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD) for ten years, with the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR) and Vice-president of the Parliament in 2001-2002. She speaks Dutch, English, German and French. van Gorsel is a Doctor of psychology of the University of Leiden, was Head of conferences and seminars of Netherlands Management Association (NIVE) and Head of sales for Service One before she became an MEP. Her poilitcal roles included: - ELDR Coordinator for the Industry, External Trade, Research and Energy Committee;
- rapporteur on REACH (2003);
- spokesperson on behalf of ELDR on Industrial policy, research & technological development, Trade policy (WTO), energy and SMEs;
- chair of the Interparliamentary delegation for relations with China;
- founding Chair of the European Internet Foundation (EIF);

On 20 September 2004, van Gorsel joined Blueprint Partners, a multinational group of sixteen public affairs and communications professionals which was founded in 2003 to offer the clients of the group valuable insight into the workings of all the European institutions as Senior Counsellor. She was titled "Powerhouse" in the group's announcehttp://www.blueprintpartners.be/news_detail.php?news_id=10 of her recruitment. She was also described as knowing the North American cultural and political scene. This might be due to her being a member of the Steering Committee of the Transatlantic Policy Network (TPN), a lobbing organisation for US interests in the EU. On it's job applicant information page the company asks for senior level experience, particularly within blue chip multinational companies (amongst other qualifications). Plooij was also the founding Chair of the European Internet Foundation which was created as a Lobbying platform for large Europen Internet Service Providers in Brussels. which regularily heads dinner evenings with MEPs. The TPN mission was kicked-off on Monday 14 July, in Seattle at the Microsoft headquarters with tree highlights: - a Roundtable Discussion with the title 'Intellectual property in the Digital Era' with Microsoft's Deputy General Counsel Nancy Anderson
- a Meeting with Marshall Phelps, then IBM's Head of Patents Unit on Patent Strategy, Deputy General Counsel and Corporate Vice President.
- and a Roundtable discussion with Scott Charnay, Chief Trustworthy Computing Strategist on Data Protection.
The day finished with a Site Tour the the Boeing Aircraft Factory, Everett WA for the 747/767/777 models. The mission ended with a visit to the US Department of Justice, meeting with John Ashcroft, John Malcolm, Michael Sussman and John LoGolbo on Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property. She was appointed draftsperson of the Industry Committee on the Directive on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions and proposend an Amendment for a 'grace period' which would have changed EU patent practice in the field of software patent more close to the US practice of "first to invent" as opposed to the EU practice of "first to file".
