Elk Township is a township located in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,519.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 81.1 km² (31.3 mi²). 81.1 km² (31.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 1,519 people, 570 households, and 440 families residing in the township. The population density is 18.7/km² (48.5/mi²). There are 627 housing units at an average density of 7.7/km² (20.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 99.01% White, 0.00% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 570 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.8% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 2.91. In the township the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males. The median income for a household in the township is $38,333, and the median income for a family is $42,202. Males have a median income of $29,500 versus $19,345 for females. The per capita income for the township is $16,883. 6.0% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 1.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
