Elizabeth City, North Carolina

Elizabeth City is a city located in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,188. It is the county seat of Pasquotank County. Elizabeth City is home to Elizabeth City State University and to the largest United States Coast Gaurd Air Station on the East Coast. The city was founded in 1793 and is nicknamed the "Harbor of Hospitality".

Geography

Elizabeth City is located at 36°17'44" North, 76°13'30" West (36.295585, -76.224954). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.8 km² (9.6 mi²). 23.2 km² (8.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,188 people, 6,577 households, and 4,189 families residing in the city. The population density is 742.3/km² (1,923.2/mi²). There are 7,463 housing units at an average density of 322.3/km² (835.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 40.24% White, 56.60% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,577 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% are married couples living together, 23.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 31.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.01. In the city the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 15.1% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $24,193, and the median income for a family is $28,037. Males have a median income of $27,434 versus $20,836 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,333. 27.2% of the population and 25.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.5% of those under the age of 18 and 23.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
