Elin Oxenhielm

Elin Oxenhielm was a Swedish mathematics student, who, in December 2003, mistakenly claimed to have solved Hilbert's sixteenth problem. Her paper had been accepted to the journal Nonlinear Analysis, but after further review the acceptance was withdrawn. An editorial announcement by Editor-in-Chief V. Lakshmikantham reads: "This paper has been withdrawn from the Articles in Press section of ScienceDirect. Further referee reports, which provide specific details, show that the proof offered does not stand on a rigorous foundation and that further work is necessary."
