Electron Tunnel Microscopy
Both the
scanning tunneling microscope
and the
atomic force microscope
operate on different principles from other instruments in that they do not use focused beams of particles. Instead they use atomic-sized probes which pass over the object being scanned and record the changes in size of the sample at a level close to the dimensions of a single atom.
