Elections In Mauritania

Elections in Mauritania gives information on election and election results in Mauritania. An election is a process in which a vote is held to elect candidates to an office. It is the mechanism by which a democracy fills elective offices in the legislature, and sometimes the executive and judiciary, and in which electorates choose local government officials.
See election for a more comprehensive discussion and the List of democracy and elections-related topics for an overview on related topics.
Mauritania is a one party dominant state with the Democratic and Social Republican Party in power. Opposition parties are allowed, but are widely considered to have no real chance of gaining power. Mauritania elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. The president is elected for a six year term by the people. The Parliament (Barlamane/Parlement) has two chambers. The National Assembly (Al Jamiya al-Wataniyah/Assemble Nationale) has 81 members, elected for a five year term in single-seat constituencies. The Senate (Majlis al-Shuyukh/Snat) has 56 members, 53 members elected for a six year term by munical councillors with one third renewed every two years and 3 members elected by Mauritanians abroad.
