El Cerro-Monterey Park is a census-designated place located in Valencia County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,483.

Geography

El Cerro-Monterey Park is located at 34°46'13" North, 106°38'15" West (34.770149, -106.637606). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24.2 km² (9.3 mi²). 24.2 km² (9.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,483 people, 1,479 households, and 1,240 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 226.9/km² (587.6/mi²). There are 1,620 housing units at an average density of 67.0/km² (173.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 58.03% White, 0.80% African American, 1.79% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 33.89% from other races, and 5.09% from two or more races. 73.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,479 households out of which 59.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.1% are non-families. 11.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.71 and the average family size is 3.97. In the CDP the population is spread out with 41.4% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 13.4% from 45 to 64, and 3.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 106.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.0 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $25,761, and the median income for a family is $25,593. Males have a median income of $21,775 versus $17,298 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $8,734. 34.6% of the population and 27.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
