Eigg
Eigg
is one of the
Small Isles
, in the
Scottish
Inner Hebrides
. It has population of round 60 people, who bought the island in
1997
. The main settlement on Eigg is
Cleadale
, on the north coast. It is known for its
quartz
beach
, called the "singing sands" on account of the squeaking noise it makes if walked on when dry.
Ferries
sail from
Galmisdale
on the south coast to
Canna
,
Rum
and
Muck
, and to
Mallaig
on the mainland. Galmisdale is also home to the island's
community centre
. The centre of the island is a
moorland
plateau
, rising to over 400 metres at
An Sgurr
, a stump of
pitchstone
surrounded by
Manx shearwater
birds.
