Eigg

Eigg is one of the Small Isles, in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. It has population of round 60 people, who bought the island in 1997. The main settlement on Eigg is Cleadale, on the north coast. It is known for its quartz beach, called the "singing sands" on account of the squeaking noise it makes if walked on when dry. Ferries sail from Galmisdale on the south coast to Canna, Rum and Muck, and to Mallaig on the mainland. Galmisdale is also home to the island's community centre. The centre of the island is a moorland plateau, rising to over 400 metres at An Sgurr, a stump of pitchstone surrounded by Manx shearwater birds.
