Edwardsville, Illinois

Edwardsville is a city located in Madison County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,491. It is the county seat of Madison County. A campus of Southern Illinois University is located here (the other campus is located in Carbondale.) Edwardsville is a part of the St. Louis area.

Geography

Edwardsville is located at 38°48'14" North, 89°57'30" West (38.803986, -89.958195). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.5 km² (14.1 mi²). 35.9 km² (13.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.56% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 21,491 people, 7,975 households, and 5,199 families residing in the city. The population density is 598.2/km² (1,549.2/mi²). There are 8,331 housing units at an average density of 231.9/km² (600.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.70% White, 8.66% African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.69% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,975 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.99. In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 16.0% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $50,921, and the median income for a family is $65,555. Males have a median income of $47,045 versus $29,280 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,510. 8.6% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.3% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
