Eden, North Carolina

Eden is a city located in Rockingham County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,908.

Geography

Eden is located at 36°30'23" North, 79°44'42" West (36.506434, -79.745092). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.3 km² (15.2 mi²). 38.9 km² (15.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 15,908 people, 6,644 households, and 4,371 families residing in the city. The population density is 409.2/km² (1,060.1/mi²). There are 7,368 housing units at an average density of 189.5/km² (491.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.43% White, 22.15% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 2.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,644 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% are married couples living together, 16.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.90. In the city the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,670, and the median income for a family is $35,259. Males have a median income of $29,443 versus $21,797 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,275. 17.2% of the population and 13.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.6% of those under the age of 18 and 16.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
