Binomial name
Rhododendron atlanticum
Dwarf azalea, Rhododendron atlanticum (also known as coastal azalea) is a shrub native to coastal areas of southeastern North America. It is not as common as its planted cousins, nor as showy, but occasionally the shrub forms a thick understory in a forest, due to spread by underground stolons. The fragrant flowers are usually white to pink, sometimes with a bit of yellow. It is primarily a wild flower in North America, not widely planted, but it has been introduced and is popular in England. In the US it is regarded as a good plant for heavy soils, but spreads itself too freely in sandy soil.
