Dunnet Head

Dunnet Head is a peninsular which includes the most northerly point of the mainland of Great Britain, about 18 kilometres west/northwest of John o' Groats and similarly about 20 kilometres from Duncansby Head, at and . The point is called Dunnet Head point or Easter Head.

The headland's boundary with the rest of the British mainland can be defined as a north-south line running from Little Clett and Brough to the mouth of Dunnet Burn in Dunnet Bay. This line is followed along most of its route by a road linking Brough with the village of Dunnet. (See B855 road). From this line the headland projects westward and northward into the Pentland Firth, and shelters the more southerly waters of Dunnet Bay. The penisula is east of the burgh of Thurso and on a clear day it affords excellent views of Stroma to the east, and Hoy and Orkney Mainland 15 kilometres away to the north across the Pentland Firth. At the top of the 90 metre cliffs at Easter Head there stands a 105 metre tall lighthouse (Dunnet Head Lighthouse) which was built in 1831, as well as minor fortifications built in World War II to protect the naval base at Scapa Flow and a bunker used by the Royal Observer Corps during the Cold War. Burifa Hill was the site of the master station of the Northern Gee Chain, which became operational in 1941 and remained in use until March 1946. The chain included slave stations at Scousburgh in Shetland and Sango near Cape Wrath. A monitor station was also at Burifa Hill. Dunnet Head lochs are restocked routinely with brown trout fry. Fishing by permit is between April and early October. Permits are available from Dunnet Head Fishing Association. Dunnet Head Information Centre is north/northwest of Brough on the B855.
