Duke Nukem 3DDuke Nukem 3D is a first-person shooter developed by 3D Realms and released on January 29, 1996 by Apogee Software, featuring the adventures of Duke Nukem, loosely based on a character that had appeared in earlier platform games by the company, Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem 2. The game was mainly notable for the (often crude) humor it introduced into what had previously been a fairly humorless genre, including a stream of one-liners from the title character. For instance, when the player comes upon a corpse that closely resembles the player character in Doom, Duke comments, "That's one doomed space marine." That quote became famous after sites dedicated to Duke Nukem 3D began reporting that id Software filed a lawsuit against Apogee Games and 3D Realms for that quote, trying to obtain an injunction to have that removed, but was unsuccessful. Another notable quality of the game was immense interactivity and realism of the levels. The game also featured some of the most varied weapons in any first-person shooter game, including pipe-bombs with remote trigger, a freeze gun, trip bombs and a shrink ray. Another innovation was the use of working mirrors and cameras. It also contains partial nudity in the form of strippers. To be noticed the warps in the game that were exploited by the best players to warp, i.e to teleport from place to another one very quickly. That feature would only apply in some very specific places in the game and only under complex sequences and/or simultaneous moves. Good players absolutely loved those warps as they very difficult to realize and because they were, and still are powerfull and absolutely unique in the whole gaming history. In fact the warps were nothing else than an unwanted bug in the software, more specificaly in the 3D engine. 3DRealms eventually fixed it in its version 1.5 aka Atomic edition of Duke Nukem 3D. Although 3DRealms probably never realized it, those warps contributed a lot to the success of the game, and fixing it was only good for the occasional or new players. This is the reason why all the good or pro players kept playing with the previous version v1.3d in which the warps were allowed, instead of using the v1.5. The game freely plundered many themes, such as the Alien film series and the film Army of Darkness. There were also Cameos for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and The Terminator. The source code to the Duke Nukem 3D executable, which used the Build engine, was released under the GPL in April 2003. However, the game content still remains the sole property of 3D Realms. The game was quickly ported by enthusiasts to modern OSes, including Microsoft Windows and Linux. The warps have been re-enabled in all the ports, which satisfied most of the players. As of today 2004/2005, these ports gave the game a second life in multiplayer games through the Internet and a growing community is still actively playing. Today, the long-promised sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, is still in production after seven years of development. A 'teaser' video for Duke Nukem Forever was released on the Duke Nukem:Manhattan Project game CD in 2002, again citing the "When It's Done" release date. Criticism The game has been heavily criticized by some feminists, who allege that it promotes pornography and murder. Media Watch wrote that: - Duke Nukem 3D moves the "shooter" through pornography stores, where Duke can use XXX sex posters for target practice. Duke throws cash at a prostituted woman telling her to "Shake it, Baby" his gun ever ready. In Duke Nukem bonus points are awarded for the murder of these mostly prostituted and partially nude women. Duke blows up stained glass windows in an empty church or goes to strip clubs where Japanese women lower their kimonos exposing their breasts. Duke is encouraged to kill defenseless, often bound women. http://www.mediawatch.com/dukenukem.html
However, such critique appears to selectively use facts (Duke also goes to alien space base, prison, underwater, to desert, fire station, etc. -- the "Red Light District" is just one level out of about thirty) or even invent them (there are no bonus points for murder of the women; killing a stripper actually summons alien police, it's not encouraged), take them out of context (erotic poster hides a destroyable wall in one level; bound women infested with parasites is a homage to the movie Aliens, not an allusion to BDSM) and twist them to further a certain political agenda. George Broussard, the president of 3D Realms, defends the game, noting its success and arguing that consumers obviously do not find the content abusive or immoral. Fans may have happy memories of Duke Nukem 3D's network gaming maps. In particular, fort was the pick of the community maps especially for 2 or 4 player mode. The game can be played in co-operative mode, a feature ever less frequent in newer first-person shooter games. Monsters This is a list of some of the monsters in this game Assault trooper This monster is a simple monster to beat. He shoots projectiles at Duke. His resistance is 30 points of life. Assault captain This monster is an offshot of the Assault trooper that teleports to make himself harder to beat. His resistance is 60 points of life. Pig cop The pig cop is a mutant human/pig from the LAPD that hates human beings. He ducks down to make it hard to beat him and use a shotgun. His resistance is 100 points of life which is equivalent to the player's life when starting a new game. For example they can be killed in 2 shotgun shots or 1 RPG shot. Recon patrol vehicle Flying Pig Cop's vehicle that must be detroyed first before killing the Pig Cop. Octobrain The octobrain is an octopus-like monster that shoots very hurting projectiles. His resistance is 175 points of life. Protozoid slimer This monster is more annoying than the lost soul from DOOM. He jumps and sticks on the player's face. It is very easy to kill, if you have at least the smallest weapon. His resistance is 1 point of life. Overlord The tougher monster that is the boss in the 3rd episode. His resistance is 5000 points of life. Sentry Drone This monster accelerates itself toward you to cause mayhem.
