Duke Nukem (Game)

Duke Nukem is a platform game developed and released in 1991 by Apogee Software, featuring the adventures of Duke Nukem. The game was notable in its time because it featured a smart level design which allowed for very fast gameplay, and allowed everything onscreen to be shot: not just enemies, but also obstacles could be removed. The game is set in the near future, in a slightly post-apocalyptic world. Duke's mission is to stop Dr. Proton, a madman bent on ruling the world with his army of Techbots. During the game Duke leaves the city, and follows Proton to a space station, and other futuristic locations. After the game release Apogee became aware of another Duke Nukem character, in the Captain Planet and the Planeteers cartoon series. Apogee believed that TBS/DiC, creators of the series, held the rights to the Duke Nukem name, and to avoid a lawsuit Apogee's game was renamed Duke Nukum in later versions. It later turned out that Duke Nukem was not a registered name, and Apogee registered it, using the original Duke Nukem name in the sequels. Duke Nukem's graphics borrowed heavily from other games, like the original Mega Man, and a longstanding rumour is that originally Apogee planned to port Mega Man to the PC, but could not get the rights. Duke Nukem was followed by Duke Nukem 2, and Duke Nukem 3D. As of 2005, a third sequel, announced in 1997Duke Nukem Forever—is still in development.
