Dragoon (Starcraft)

The 'Protoss Dragoon' is a mechanized assault and support unit in the game Starcraft. The Dragoon consists of a mechanized exoskeleton within which a crippled or seriously injured Protoss warrior is contained. Through the use of the technology found within the Cybernetics Core, the warrior may be bonded to the Dragoon exoskeleton and eventually learn to control it as an extension of his physical body. The Protoss Dragoon possesses 100 hit points and 80 points of plasma shielding. Dragoon weaponry consists of a psychically shielded bolt of antimatter, capable of being directed towards both air and ground units. The weapon is functionally similar to that of the Photon Cannon and Protoss Arbiter. The Dragoon itself is often used as a support unit for heavy ground attack units, or alternately as a multipurpose assault unit capable of being massed and sent against enemy positions. Notable Dragoon units include the hero unit Fenix, who was originally a Zealot but later transplanted into a Dragoon shell after an unfortunate encounter with Zerg forces. Whether Fenix actually died or was merely severely injured is never made clear in the game. Taldarin is an extremely old Dragoon who made an appearance in the N64 Starcraft secret map Ressurection IV. A Dragoon made an appearance in a cutscene amidst the original Starcraft Protoss campaign, as a group of Terrans upon the world of Char destroy a damaged Dragoon with a gun emplacement. Terran operatives often had a vested interest in Zerg and Protoss alien technology, as evidenced by the Starcraft Map of the Month scenario Deception, in which Kimeran pirates steal (among other things) a data file titled "Utilizing Dragoon Technology For Human Reconstruction" from a Confederate installation.
