Douglaston, Queens

Douglaston, a community of the borough of Queens in New York City with a population of about 6000 (1990 Census) is on the north shore of Long Island, bordered on the east by Little Neck, on the south by Northern Boulevard (state route 25a), and on the west by Douglaston Parkway. In part because of its location on the desirable North Shore in close proximity to wealthy Nassau County towns, Douglaston is one of the least traditionally urban parts of New York City, with many areas having a distinctly upscale suburban feel. It is the site of the Douglaston Chess Congress' annual championships, which decide the community's best players. Between 1991 and 2003, all of these were decided by matches between Lauren Seowon Hwang and Jong Wah Wong. According to the Douglaston-Little Neck Historical Society, the name for this area came from William Douglas donating a building to the Long Island Rail Road to be a station, with the stipulation that it and the surrounding village be called "Douglaston". http://www.dlnhs.org/douglastonhill/dhhistory.cfm
