Dosso, Niger

Dosso is the name of both a department and a town in the south-west corner of Niger. It lies at the junction of the routes to Niamey, Zinder and Benin. The department has an area of 31,740 square km. Its population was 693,207 in the census of 1977; by 1988 it had increased to 1,018,895, and by 2001 it had reached 1,479,095. The town, the 7th most populous in Niger and the largest in Dosso department, had a population in 2001 of 43,300; by 2004 it had increased to 47,400. Attractions in the town include the chieftain's compound and a museum.
