Don Nickles
Donald Lee Nickles

) was a
United States Senator
from
Oklahoma
and a member of the
Republican Party
. He was born and educated in Oklahoma. He served in the
United States National Guard
from
1970
until
1976
. He then became a successful businessman, but soon entered politics. Nickles was a state senator from
1978
until his election to the United States Senate at the unusually young age of 32 in
1980
. Nickles was reelected in
1986
,
1992
and
1998
and was the senior senator of Oklahoma from
1994
to
2004
. He announced his retirement on
October 7
,
2003
. Republican
Tom Coburn
won the election to succeed him.
